Graduated from the National Military Academy in 1974, pursued a career in the Indonesian Army and served as, among others: Dan Yon Arhanud, UN Peacekeeping Officer in Bosnia, Danrem Riau Pekanbaru, Asintel Kodam V Jaya and Director of BAIS ABRI before retiring.

He is also holding several directorships for Orica owned entities, including being a member on the board of the Yarra Pilbara Nitrates JV. Bertus holds a Masters degree in Metallurgical Engineering (University of Pretoria) and Masters degree of Business Leadership (University of South Africa).
